We are all exhausted by breaking news and political wrangling. But as Christians we can’t stop caring, throw up our hands and say “whatever”.
This week has numerous memorials that highlight injustice and gaps in achieving a just society. Prejudice still flourishes as we remember the birthday of Martin Luther King. Abortions continue among the poorest and most vulnerable women as we mark the Roe vs. Wade decision. Divisions still separate Christian denomination as we honor years of promoting unity. There is much to do, in addition to praying.
“If you want peace, work for justice.” Pope Paul VI
MEDITATION
Heavenly Father, even in the Old Testament as shown by those marvelous prophets Amos and Hosea, your message stressed the need for your servants to effect social as well as individual justice in the world.
You divine Son took the same message even further, calling for social charity as well.
And your modern Popes have all stressed social justice if there is to be peace amoung people and nations.
Grant me the grace to fight social evils and oppression even as I struggle against evil in myself.
Make me use my freedom according as you will in the pursuit of justice and peace for your honor and glory.
